Guide

How to use The Source Radar

The Source Radar is a live list of what journalists are asking for right now. How you use it depends on who you are, so pick the guide that fits.

Journalists

Find a source, expert or case study

Writing a story and need someone to quote? Post what you need once and it goes straight to PR teams and experts who can help. It's free and you don't need an account.

Post a request
  1. 1

    Post your request

Go to Post a request. Say what you need in one line (“Dietitians to comment on the ultra-processed food study”), then add the angle, who you want to hear from and your deadline.

  2. 2

    Choose how people reach you

Use the private Source Radar tracker, email, a link or social DM. The tracker keeps your address private and puts responses in one place.

  3. 3

    Confirm and open your tracker

We email one private link. Clicking it publishes the request and opens your workspace — no account setup or password.

  4. 4

    Review and manage responses

Shortlist, decline or mark tracker responses as contacted. You can also see reach, change the deadline, close the request and reuse it as a template.

Tips

  • • Always give a deadline. Requests with a deadline get faster, better-targeted replies.
  • • Say who you want to hear from: “NHS GP”, “founder of a UK fintech”, “someone who has switched to a heat pump”.
  • • Already post on Bluesky or X? Use #JournoRequest or #PRrequest and we pick it up automatically.

Rather your Bluesky or X requests weren't listed here? Email alerts@thesourceradar.com with your handle and we'll remove what we hold and stop picking up your posts.

PR & marketing

Get your clients and spokespeople quoted

For agencies and in-house teams looking after several clients or spokespeople. One feed and per-client alerts replace checking hashtags, newsletters and group chats.

Start free
  1. 1

Create a free account and open the Feed

Every request from Bluesky, X, outlet callout feeds and direct submissions, with the spam already removed. Filter by category, region and urgency, and save anything worth a second look.

  2. 2

Add a profile for every clientPro

Describe each client once: their sectors, the regions they cover and the spokespeople you can offer. Pro has no cap, so add every client and expert on your books.

  3. 3

Set up as many alert rules as you needPro

Turn each client profile into one or more alert rules, add keywords if you like, and choose where each goes: email, Slack, Discord or a webhook the moment a request matches, or a daily digest at your chosen hour. Unlimited rules, so one client can have a broad rule and a tight one.

  4. 4

    Open the request and pitch

Each request shows the outlet, deadline and how the journalist wants to be contacted. Pitch them directly, the way they asked.

  5. 5

    Log the pitch

Record what you sent against the request and update it as it goes: sent, replied, won. Your Pitches page shows the hit rate you can put in a client report.

Tips

  • • Speed matters most. Journalists often close a request within an hour or two of posting it.
  • • Match the brief exactly. If they ask for a GP, don't offer a nutritionist.
  • • Keep the pitch short: who the spokesperson is, why they fit, and two or three lines they could quote.

Specialists & small businesses

Get quoted without hiring a PR agency

You're the expert in what you do, and journalists need experts every day: an accountant for a Budget explainer, a solicitor on a change in the law, a GP on the winter virus season, a plumber for a piece on boiler costs. This takes a few minutes a day.

Start free
  1. 1

Create a free account and filter the Feed

Set the category and region to match what you do. That's your shortlist of requests worth reading.

  2. 2

Tell us who you are, onceXpert

On Xpert, your first visit walks you through a profile: what you can speak on, where, and the credentials that make you worth quoting. It pre-fills your alerts and gives every pitch a ready-made intro.

  3. 3

Let the requests come to youXpert

The free feed works if you look once or twice a day. Xpert gives you a My Feed matched to your pitch profile and sends an email the moment a relevant request arrives, or a daily digest at the hour you choose, so you pitch while the story is still open.

  4. 4

Reply with something they can use

Open the request to see how the journalist wants to be contacted. Send two or three sentences that answer their question directly, plus your name, business and town.

  5. 5

    Keep track

Log what you sent on the request so you know who you've spoken to and which pieces got you a mention.

Tips

  • • You don't need to be a big name. Journalists want real people with real experience — and the letters after your name help.
  • • Regional and trade outlets are easier to get into, and readers trust them.
  • • Only answer requests you genuinely fit. One good quote beats ten generic ones.

Startups

Be the founder journalists find first

Journalists write about startups constantly and often need one to feature: a case study, a founder's view on a funding round, a company using a new technology. Be ready when they ask.

Start free
  1. 1

Create a free account and watch your sector

Filter the Feed to Technology or Business and your region, and look out for words like founder, startup and case study.

  2. 2

Set up a profile for the companyXpert

Set your sectors and region and list the founders as spokespeople, then add alert rules with keywords for your space (fintech, climate, AI, health). A solo founder is fine on Xpert with email alerts; a team wanting rules in Slack and more than one profile wants Pro.

  3. 3

    Have your kit ready

A one-paragraph description of the company, a short founder bio and a headshot. With those to hand you can reply to a request in minutes rather than hours.

  4. 4

Log pitches and reuse the wins

Track each pitch through to publication. Every piece you land is an “as seen in” for your website, your deck and your investor updates.

Tips

  • • Offer data, a customer story or a strong opinion, not a product pitch.
  • • Say yes to quick calls. A ten-minute chat often turns into a bigger mention.
  • • Founders are experts too: comment on your industry, not just your company.
